Adam Again
Dig
©1992 Brainstorm Artists
Int'l.
The first time I saw Adam Again was at Freedom Fest '88 up in Ontario. I must be a deadhead at heart, because
I found myself swayed into a dancing frenzy then. It could have been the domino effect of seeing Riki Michele dance. Who knows?
All I know is I miss Gene Eugene. His influence on this small niche of
alternative independent music that we like to call "Christian" is still felt even today. Gene Eugene Andrusco was a child
actor, a producer of many up and coming bands (some of whom have suffered the same fate of little to no exposure), and the
leader of this loose configuration of musicians and voices known as Adam Again.
Their sound was an urban, rhythmic melting pot of rock, old school R&B,
and dance; almost a Los Lobos element. It usually got the feet moving. Lyrically, there was always humility in the mix with
Gene. Dark, honest paintings of the soul were his musings, of failed love, doubts, and relationships.
Not very popular for the "Christian" radio airwaves, or for that matter
the "Christian" bookstore, where there was little promotion, but I digress... River On Fire is a haunting song of pain:
"What would you say if you knew what I
was thinking?
Maybe you do, but you know not to dig too deep
What if I knew what you needed for sure?
I've seen
in your eyes you need more, much more
And I could be happy, and you could be miserable
I'll grab a metaphor out of
the air
The Cuyahoga River on fire"
This is one of those bands that I drove a long distance to see. My very first
C-Stone in '91, I remember being beside myself with exhaustion from the 15-16 hour trip in my little Geo Metro. I came to
experience community, the other bands, but Adam Again got these tired feet grooving. That is what I remember most.
